Castle of Sabbionara / Avio
On top of a rocky outcrop stands the Castle of Avio, which dominates the village of Sabbionara and overlooks the Vallagarina crossed by the river Adige. You enter the castle through a door-tower crowned with battlements dovetail. On the right emerges soon the bulk of a tower that stands between the eastern walls: it is the "Picadora", so called because, according to tradition, on the terrace were hanged the condemned.
In the large perimeter of the walls stand first the House of Guards, at the center the imposing Baronial Palace in gray stone from the near Mount Baldo and on top of the cliff the Keep.
The path leading to the massive Keep, through the fourteenth-century "House of Guards", follows the old road leading to the Castle, also known as "around the walls."
The narrow road winds through five doors once each with ingenious methods of defense. In the meadow below the Baronial Palace it can indulge in a quick stop admiring the view of the vineyards of Vallagarina.
